The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living - by Russ Harris

Mental Health, Emotions, Depression, Anxiety, Mood, etc.

This book is excellent. It is all about using ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), which is my preferred approach to counseling/psychotherapy. It is very practical and easy to read. This is not a "Christian" book or faith-based book, but it is compatible with and can be integrated with faith and spirituality.

The Way Out: A Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven Approach to Healing Chronic Pain - by Alan Gordon and Alon Ziv

Chronic Pain, Mental Health

Pain is complicated and often has many causes. This book is not a magic wand or quick fix. That being said, many of my clients whom I've seen for things like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or TBI, but who also were dealing with chronic pain, experienced great benefit from this book and the strategies in it. For example, strategies in this book have been helpful for taking the edge off of the pain enough to get improvement in sleep, which can go a long way towards healing overall (physical and mental healing).

Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Strategies to Sleep Your Way to a Better Body, Better Health, And Bigger Success: A Longevity Book - By Shawn Stevenson

Sleep, Mental Health, Brain Health

Good quality sleep is extremely important for brain health and mental health, both for our emotional well-being and for the health and performance of our mind, memory, and other cognitive abilities. This is an excellent book about sleep and sleep hygiene. I thought I knew a lot about sleep hygiene, until I read this book. It's an enjoyable read and Shawn discusses many important practical strategies to take in order to optimize sleep.

The Real Heaven: What the Bible Actually Says - by Chip Ingram and Lance Witt

Faith, Spirituality, Heaven, Joy, Peace

Our understanding and beliefs about Heaven play an enormous role in how we live life and in our attitudes and emotions. How was James able to "Consider it pure joy" and Paul able to "be content in all situations"? I'm willing to bet their beliefs about Heaven were a big factor. What do you believe Heaven will be like? Chip and Lance do a great job in this book helping us think through our questions about what Heaven will be like.

Don't Give Up: Faith That Gives You the Confidence to Keep Believing and the Courage to Keep Going - by Kyle Idleman

Faith, Spirituality, Motivation, Mental Health, Depression, Anxiety

When feeling down, discouraged, overwhelmed, stressed, depressed, anxious, this book is a great encouragement.

The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth About Extraordinary Results - by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan

Personal Improvement, Strengthening the skill of prioritization, Cognitive Improvement

This is not really a mental health book or a spirituality/faith book. Rather, it is a self-improvement/life success book. However, it is helping us improve our success by improving our skill at prioritization. In this way, we are engaging in cognitive strengthening - strengthening our cognitive skill of mental organization and prioritization. These are high level cognitive skills, and so by default we are then also exercising lower level cognitive skills like language, attention, and memory. This is not a complicated book; it's a fairly easy read and is quite worth it.

Precious In His Sight: The Power of God's Transforming Love - by Theresa Ingram

Mental Health, Faith, Spiritual Health, Self-Image, Depression, Anxiety, Self-Worth

To be honest, I have not read this book. However, I have reviewed the set of Affirmation Cards that are associated with this book, and I have listened to Theresa's husband, Chip Ingram, discuss the book and the cards in his podcast episodes (Look up Living On The Edge with Chip Ingram). Take every thought captive, especially those thoughts about yourself, your worth. Our thoughts about ourself are often a factor contributing to depression, anxiety, and long term effects of trauma. Developing habits to change those thoughts is vital for overcoming such suffering. This book will help with that.

Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of Your Life - by Henry Cloud and John Townsend

Relationships, Faith, Mental Health

If one or more relationships are a big source of your stress, anxiety, depression, or suffering in general, you need this book. Boundaries are extremely important in relationships, but they can be tricky. Cloud and Townsend do a great job explaining boundaries and how to improve them.

The Miracle Morning - The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed To Transform Your Life (Before 8AM)
by Hal Elrod

Self-improvement, Life Success, Depression

I've struggled with the snooze button for a long time. This book helped me overcome that and start my day off well.

Be Useful: Seven Tools For Life - by Arnold Schwarzenegger

Self-improvement, Life Success, Depression, Inspiration/motivation

This book is really excellent. The concepts are not rocket science or earth shattering, but they are really important insights to be reminded of, and his story is very interesting and motivating. An easy but very worthwhile read.

The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts - by Gary Chapman

Relationships, Mental Health

This is also an easy read and fairly straightforward, but I see the importance of the concepts in this book in so many relationships of clients I work with. This is a must read for anyone wanting to improve their relationships.

Heaven Is For Real: A little boy's astounding story of his trip to Heaven and back - by Todd Burpo

Faith, Spirituality, Heaven

A fascinating story. What do you believe about Heaven?

After - by Bruce Greyson, M.D.

Life After Death, Near-death experiences, Faith, Spirituality, Death

Dr. Greyson has been studying near death experiences from a scientific perspective for decades now. People who report being awake and alert and aware of what is going on when their body is clinically dead. Out-of-body experiences. Are they hallucinations? Delusions? Just made up stories for attention? Evidence of our soul or spirit that lives on past death? Evidence of life after death? Dr. Greyson has attempted to study this as scientifically as possible. With stories from over 1,000 near-death experiencers, he has summarized what we can learn and know from these stories. This book is an excellent read. It is a good balance of actual stories and more scientific conclusions/summaries, making it an enjoyable read. It's an important topic, too, with implications for life, faith, and mental health.
